Word of the Week: Adorable

Come on class, A is for adorable.

Lucky for us gals that may not be sizes 0-4 and had a hard time pulling off mini skirts, short shirts, and tight clingy jersey knits.

The babydoll is back! Along with shirt dresses and empire waists. We're revisiting the 50s and let's face it, the 50s were probably more classy. The misconception with these styles is that they're "frumpy" or have too much fabric or "not sexy". But gals, I don't know of too many dresses much sexier than a well fitted empire waist dress that gives you that darling hour glass figure. Maybe it's not low-cut, but the way it'll make your body look is divine.

Now where to find a great dress? A worthwhile way to spend a couple hours would be to check eBay's vintage clothing section along with thrift stores or consignment shops for old vintage dresses. Sometimes they're a deal over new dresses (vintage retail is a crazy business right now, everyone wants a piece of it), but it can be overpriced and you really have to decide if the particular dress is worth the money. I'm thrifty, but sometimes spending the extra $20 on something you love is worth it. Some websites worthy of your attention would be:

- www.pinupgirlclothing.com. I'll be the first to say, this website isn't full of babydoll styles or even empire waists, but there are some fantastic retro looks that you could show off. A tip, this website sells out of sizes quickly, so if you see your size in something you love one day, you're better off to purchase right then. No matter the overdraft fee.

- www.shopplasticland.com. Priced similarly to Pinupgirlclothing.com, the selection is a little more diverse. There's more "cutesy" here, but you know, in a good way.

- heyviv.com. Acutal 50s vintage clothing at a reasonable price. She's got some really nice dresses (although the speciality seems to be poodle skirts). I'm big enough to overlook it.

And accessories (or dresses, too)? Please go to my favorite place online; etsy.com. If you haven't been it's a site that allows people who create things by hand to sell their products online. It may sound like your mom's craft fair where everything has flowers and basketweaving involved, but it's most certainly not. Just go to the homepage and you'll begin to see the modern, amazing work that these artists put out. An important point- you might expect the prices to be much higher than what you'd find in a mass produced store, but that's the beauty of etsy! They've got fabulous stuff for mere pennies and how are they to feed themselves Ramen if we've got no love?
